Status of Service Member
- Active Duty
- The term “active duty” means full-time duty in the active military service of the United States, including Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Space Force, and US Coast Guard. When National Guard members are activated for federal service under a Title 10 authority, their duty is federally controlled and federally funded. National Guard members serving under Title 10 orders are in an equivalent active-duty status as their active component counterparts.
- National Guard
- Refers to members of the Army National Guard and/or Air National Guard.
- Reserves
- Refers to members of the Army Reserves, Navy Reserves, Marine Corps Reserve, Air Force Reserves and Coast Guard Reserves.
- Veteran
- Refers to any person who served on active duty in the U.S. armed forces (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Space Force, or Coast Guard) and was discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable.
- Deceased/KIA
- Refers to any person who served on active duty in the U.S. armed forces (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Space Force, or Coast Guard) and was discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable who is now deceased or was killed in action.
- ROTC
- Reserve Officers' Training Corps, a college-based program in the United States that trains students to become commissioned officers in the military while earning a degree. It combines military education, leadership training, and physical fitness, often with scholarships covering tuition. Graduates serve as officers in the Army, Navy, or Air Force.
Relation to Service Member
- Dependent
- According to 37 USC 401: (a) Dependent Defined.-In this chapter, the term “dependent”, with respect to a member of a uniformed service, means the following persons: (1) The spouse of the member. (2) An unmarried child of the member who- (A) is under 21 years of age; (B) is incapable of self-support because of mental or physical incapacity and is in fact dependent on the member for more than one-half of the child's support; or (C) is under 23 years of age, is enrolled in a full-time course of study in an institution of higher education approved by the Secretary concerned for purposes of this subparagraph, and is in fact dependent on the member for more than one-half of the child's support.
- Children
- (1) The term “child” includes- (A) a stepchild of the member (except that such term does not include a stepchild after the divorce of the member from the stepchild's parent by blood); (B) an adopted child of the member, including a child placed in the home of the member by a placement agency (recognized by the Secretary of Defense) in anticipation of the legal adoption of the child by the member; and (C) an illegitimate child of the member if the member's parentage of the child is established in accordance with criteria prescribed in regulations by the Secretary concerned.

- Deadline
- The date applications close. "Ongoing" means the fund reviews applications continuously until money runs out.
- Service Member Affiliation
- Whose service makes you eligible: your own, a parent's, a grandparent's, or a spouse's.
- State Specific
- Some awards require residency or enrollment in a particular state. "Nationwide" awards have no state restriction.
- Intended Program
- What the money can pay for: undergraduate, graduate, trade school, licensure, or certification programs.
